Sept. 11, 2000 -- Level 3 Communications, Inc. said it
has already sold out of colocation space in its second Silicon
Valley data center, a 96,000 square foot building in Sunnyvale
that opened today.
Level 3 now plans a third Silicon Valley facility to accommodate
growing customer demand.
"Silicon
Valley continues to be the hub of the Internet Economy,'' said
Kevin J. O'Hara, president and chief operating officer for Level
3. "Demand for our services there continues to grow, and,
at the moment, is outpacing our construction of new facilities."
In October
1998, Level 3 opened its first advanced data center in Sunnyvale.
That facility comprises 77,000 square feet. Construction on the
second was completed in June 2000. The third facility is expected
to be operational in the first quarter of 2001
. Level 3's advanced data centers, called "Gateways,''
are connected to the company's international Internet Protocol-based
network. Gateways serve as portals to the network and provide
a fail-safe environment in which e-commerce companies can physically
locate their equipment. The facilities also house Level 3's own
equipment and offer customers interconnection with the public
Internet and other local and long distance networks.
Level
3 says it expects to substantially complete the U.S. and European
intercity network by the fourth quarter of 2000.
