Sept. 6, 2000 -- Level 3 Communications, Inc. said it has
started construction on a second Internet and telecom facility
in the Boston area. The new 500,000 square foot Gateway facility
in Needham, Mass. will be connected by the Level 3 network to
the company's existing Boston metro Gateway.
"Our
expansion taking place in New England and other areas around the
country is a direct result of the continuing growth of the Internet
economy,'' said Kevin J. O'Hara, president and chief operating
officer for Level 3. "Our Gateways enable Internet service
providers and other Level 3 customers to meet the growing demand
for Internet and communications services in these important markets.''
Level 3 already has a 40,000 square foot Gateway in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, which opened in January 1999. The new facility,
located in the New England Business Center, is being constructed
in two phases, the first which will include three floors and be
approximately 314,000 square feet when built out, and is expected
to be operational in the third quarter of 2001.
"There
is such an incredible demand that is increasingly growing for
this type of facility in New England,'' said Brian Corcoran, program
manager of Gateway Deployment for Level 3.
Level
3 currently has secured approximately 4.4 million square feet
of Gateway and technical space worldwide, and expects to ultimately
have 6.5 million square feet of space secured.
