  • October 19, 2001 -- Interconnection provider Sigma Networks, Inc. has expanded its network with the launch of services in the Dallas and Los Angeles metro areas.
Sigma is a "carrier's carrier" that specializes in providing high-bandwidth connections between data centers and telecom hotels in its metro service areas. It is now online in four of the five major markets it has targeted - Washington DC, Los Angeles, Dallas and San Francisco. Sigma plans to expand into New York later this year.
Launched in February with more than $400 million in financial backing, its founders include former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt, Benchmark Capital Partner Andy Rachleff, and Concentric Network cofounder John Peters.
In the last 10 days, Sigma has announced interconnections partnerships with LighTrade Inc. and eXchange Colocation that provide key access in its core markets. LighTrade's "pooling points" will facilitate network transfers in Washington, Los Angeles and New York, while eXchange will provide interconnections through its San Francisco carrier hotel.
Sigma's Dallas and Los Angeles networks will encompass the most heavily trafficked data points-of-presence (POPs) in these cities, helping to smooth the delivery of telecom traffic.
Sigma's network will connect six carrier hotel buildings in Dallas - including the Infomart and 2020 Live Oak - and seven sites in Los Angeles.
"Dallas and Los Angeles constitute two of the most important communications markets in the US,'' said Peters, the CEO of Sigma Networks. "Our strategy to develop a deep footprint of the top trafficked POPs in the top data markets in the country enables us to give carriers and service providers connections where they really need them.''
Sigma also connects 20 sites in the San Francisco/Silicon Valley market and another 18 in Washington and northern Virginia. It will operate in at least nine facilities in New York and northern New Jersey.
Sigma Networks provides seamless interconnections to the most desirable carrier hotels, colocation centers, data centers, and other major points of data aggregation through strategic partnerships in each of its markets to accommodate the enormous need for data connectivity in the metro.
