Expands Into Florida
May 22, 2001 -- Dominion Telecom has expanded its network
with a deal for more than 2,000 route-miles of fiber that will
expand its growing network from Raleigh, N.C., to Miami.
The
company, the telecom subsidiary of Dominion power, did not disclose
the identity of the seller of the fiber.

"This expansion gives us direct access to the Florida
peninsula and positions us well to serve international markets
via cable heads in both Florida and through our existing network
in New York and New Jersey,'' said Gregg Kamper, Dominion Telecom
senior vice president and general manager. "This new addition
is another step toward building the densest network east of the
Mississippi for our customers.''
Various segments of the fiber network are projected to
be operational by the end of the second quarter of this year.
The entire network should be up and running by the end of the
first quarter of 2002, the company said.
Other cities served by the expansion include Atlanta, Jacksonville,
Orlando, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Sarasota
and Tampa.
Dominion Telecom is
a facilities-based, inter-exchange and local carrier that provides
broadband solutions to wholesale customers throughout the eastern
United States. The company is expanding its fiber-optic network
from its current 35,000 fiber miles (3,600 route miles) to more
than 800,000 fiber miles (9,000 route miles).
