  • Mar. 18, 2003 -- Regional provider NetCarrier Inc. has acquired a Newark, NJ telecom facility as a first step toward expanding into the greater New York market, the company said today.
NetCarrier purchased the telephone switching facility from Telergy, a New York-based telecommunications company that declared bankruptcy in late 2001 and sold its remaining assets.
NetCarrier paid $750,000 for the 7,000 square foot central office facility, which has an estimated value of $12 million. The site includes office space and a 900 square foot "meet-me-room" for connection to other providers' networks. The transaction was completed in February.
The building is located near the busy I-95 corridor and will easily connect to NetCarrier's Philadelphia network. NetCarrier plans to launch its integrated voice and data services in New York City and northern New Jersey by late summer.
"This is a key acquisition for NetCarrier," said Christopher Peltier, NetCarrier's founder and Chief Technology Officer. "Telergy spared no expense when they built the facility during the dot-com era. With a few minor modifications, we can retrofit the facility for our next-generation voice packet and data platform for a fraction of the cost.
" It also allows us to move our three existing points of presence in that area into the Telergy facility, resulting in maximized efficiencies and reduced operating costs, which in turn means more competitive prices for our customers," said Peltier, who said NetCarrier will spend the next three to four months making technical improvements to the facility.
NetCarrier has made a series of acquisitions in the past two years. As part of its entry into northern New Jersey, NetCarrier purchased Eclipse Internet Access, an Internet service provider, in early 2001.
Founded in 1996, NetCarrier offers a complete line of voice and broadband communications solutions, including networks for multi- tenant facilities, next generation wireless and dedicated high-speed connections. The company also offers managed security and firewall protection, web hosting and server colocation.
